Work is tied up with our identities and our everyday lives in profound ways. We are encouraged to love our jobs and live the ‘values’ of the companies we work for. This means that when we criticise work, we often come up against fear and confusion. This fear is not merely the product of a work ethic promulgated by elites. Given that, under capitalism, work becomes the only avenue for self-development, respect and fulfilment, this is a genuine fear of a loss of self.
